In the tech world, Mark Zuckerberg's name is universally recognized. As the founder and CEO of Facebook, he changed the way we interact with the world and shaped the future of social media. So, how did this tech giant achieve such success?
Early Life:
Mark Zuckerberg was the second of four children and showed a keen interest in computers and programming from a young age. During high school, he began writing his own software and, with his father's encouragement, continued to delve into computer science.
In 2002, Zuckerberg graduated from Exeter Academy and enrolled at Harvard University, where he studied psychology and computer science.
During his sophomore year at Harvard, he developed a program called CourseMatch, which allowed users to choose courses based on what other students were taking. Later, he created another program called Facemash, where students could vote on the best-looking people from a selection of photos. According to Zuckerberg's roommate, he created this just for fun. The site displayed photos from the university's directories without authorization, which led to its shutdown by the university administration after it overwhelmed Harvard's servers and sparked privacy concerns.
Entrepreneurial Journey:
In November 2003, Zuckerberg created Facemash, a site for rating the attractiveness of students, which was the precursor to Facebook.
In 2004, Zuckerberg and his roommates launched Facebook. After seeing its growing popularity, Zuckerberg decided to drop out of Harvard and move to Silicon Valley to focus on the venture. Facebook has since become one of the world's most important social networking sites.
By 2010, Facebook had over 400 million registered users and more than 100 million daily active users, making it the top photo-sharing site in the U.S., with 8.5 million photos uploaded daily.
On May 18, 2012, Facebook went public. The company's IPO was the largest in Silicon Valley's history, surpassing Google, and Zuckerberg's net worth approached $30 billion.
On October 28, 2021, Facebook announced it would change its name to "Meta" to emphasize its focus on developing the metaverse.
As of November 2023, Mark Zuckerberg's net worth was $106 billion, making him the 8th wealthiest person in the world.
Marriage:
On May 20, 2012, a day after Facebook went public, Zuckerberg updated his Facebook status to "Married," announcing his marriage to his long-time girlfriend, Priscilla Chan. Chan, who was born in Massachusetts to Chinese-Vietnamese refugee parents, met Zuckerberg while studying at Harvard in 2004. She is fluent in Cantonese, Spanish, and English and enjoys cooking.
Philanthropy:
In 2012, at the age of 28, Zuckerberg donated $498.8 million worth of Facebook stock to charity, specifically to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation to support education and health projects.
On September 23, 2013, Zuckerberg pledged $100 million to help renovate schools in Newark, New Jersey, setting a record for philanthropic donations by a young American.
He is often compared to Microsoft founder Bill Gates, as both are Harvard dropouts who built influential tech empires and became prominent philanthropists.
